Turn Holiday Shoppers Into Repeat Customers: 2026 Plan

Key takeaways

  • •Constant Contact's 2026 holiday report found that more than 70% of small businesses have no plan to invite new holiday shoppers to their email list or loyalty program.
  • •Run three touches: ask once at checkout, send a thank-you within 48 hours, then bring people back in January or February with a real reason.
  • •Ask the same way everywhere: counter sign, staff line, online checkbox, DM reply and gift card sale.
  • •Every marketing email needs a working unsubscribe link and your postal address. In the UK, existing customers need a clear way to say no when you collect their email.
  • •Get a clear written yes before adding anyone to a marketing text list.

The short answer: most holiday shoppers will buy once and disappear unless you ask them to stay in touch. Run three touches: ask once at checkout, send a thank-you within 48 hours, and send one come-back email in January or February with a real reason to return. Set up the wording now, before Black Friday on 27 November and Small Business Saturday on 28 November, so every first-time customer hears the same short ask.

This is for gift shops, boutiques, bookshops, bakeries, florists, makers, and salons, spas, gyms and studios that sell gift cards.

Why this matters this season

The numbers out this week point the same way:

  • New customers are coming. Constant Contact's Small Business Now Holiday Report (3 November 2026) found that 75% of shoppers say they are likely to buy from a small business they have never bought from this season.
  • Few businesses plan to keep them. The same report found that more than 70% of small businesses have no plan to invite new holiday shoppers to their email list or loyalty program. Only 39% plan follow-up emails in the new year, and 22% have no follow-up plan at all.
  • More money is going to small shops. Intuit QuickBooks' 2026 Holiday Shopping Survey estimates $118 billion of US holiday spending will go to small businesses, and 23% of shoppers say social platforms like Instagram and TikTok are where they are most likely to buy from a small business online.
  • Gift cards bring new faces. In the TSG and Bank of America 2026 gift card study, 55% of US consumers said they would try a new business because of a gift card, and 44% typically spend more than the card's value.

Every one of those first visits is a chance to earn a regular. The ask costs nothing but one sentence.

The 3-touch plan

Touch When What you send Goal
1. The ask At checkout, in person, online or in DMs One sentence and a sign-up Get permission to stay in touch
2. Thank-you Within 48 hours Short email, no hard sell Be remembered by name
3. Come back January or February One reason to return A second visit

Decide what people get for signing up before you write anything. Keep it honest and small: first pick of new stock, one thank-you offer in January, booking reminders, or class dates. Then use the same promise everywhere.

Touch 1: the ask (templates)

Replace the brackets.

Counter sign

New here? Join our list for first pick of new [stock / classes / dates] and one thank-you offer in January. Ask us, or scan to sign up. Unsubscribe any time.

Staff line at the till

Can I add your email for first pick of new [stock] and one thank-you offer in January? You can unsubscribe any time.

Online checkout checkbox

[ ] Email me about new [products], restocks and occasional offers from [Business name]. I can unsubscribe at any time.

Leave the box unticked. A clear yes gives you a cleaner list and fewer complaints.

DM reply after a sale

Thank you, [Name], so glad you found us! If you would like first pick of new [pieces] and a thank-you offer in January, I can add you to our email list. Just reply with your email. No spam, and you can leave any time.

When someone buys a gift card

Would the person you are gifting this to like a welcome note from us? Add their email and we will send the card with a short hello and our booking link. We will only send marketing to them if they sign up themselves.

For salons, spas, gyms and studios, the gift card recipient is often the new customer. Our Instagram DM reply templates cover the "how do I book with my voucher?" question that follows.

Permission basics: email and texts

  • US email. The CAN-SPAM Act does not require opt-in, but every marketing email needs an honest subject line, a working unsubscribe option and your valid physical postal address, and you must stop sending within 10 business days of an opt-out.
  • UK email. Under PECR regulation 22, you can email existing customers about your similar products and services if you got their address during a sale and gave them a simple way to refuse at that moment and in every email after. For anyone else, you need their consent.
  • Texts. In the US, FCC rules under the TCPA require prior express written consent for many automated marketing calls and texts. Ask for texts separately, in writing, and include a way to stop in every message.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Touch 2: the thank-you email

Send within 48 hours, from a real name.

Subject: Thank you for visiting [Business name]

Hi [Name], thank you for shopping with us this [week / weekend]. We are a small [shop / studio] in [town], and every first visit means a lot. If anything you bought needs swapping, our [return policy] is here: [link]. In January we will send you first look at [new stock / dates] and a small thank-you. See you soon, [Your name]

Link your return policy so gift swaps are easy.

Touch 3: the come-back emails

January (first or second week)

Subject: Your January thank-you from [Business name]

Hi [Name], thank you for choosing us over the holidays. This month we have [new arrivals / quiet weekday booking slots / a new class]. As a thank-you, here is [offer] until [date]. If you received a gift card from us, it is ready to use: [booking or shop link]. [Your name]

February or early spring (a reason, not just a discount)

Subject: [Valentine's / spring] at [Business name]

Hi [Name], [Valentine's Day is Sunday 14 February / spring stock lands on date]. Order by [date] for [pickup / delivery], or book [service] here: [link]. Thanks for being one of our new regulars. [Your name]

Use the words customers actually use, like "order by" and "book", not "campaign". Our guide to customer language has more swaps.

Ideas by business type

  • Gift shops and boutiques: "first pick of restocks" and a January thank-you offer.
  • Bakeries and florists: pre-order dates for Valentine's Day and spring occasions.
  • Salons, spas, gyms and studios: a welcome note for gift card recipients and quiet-week booking slots in January.
  • Makers and market sellers: next market dates and new collection drops.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Asking for an email with no reason to give it.
  • Ticking the sign-up box for people.
  • Sending the first email in March, after they have forgotten you.
  • Making every email a discount.
  • Adding a gift card buyer's friend to your marketing list without their own sign-up.

Where GBot fits

GBot reads your website or Instagram during setup, including your products, prices and tone. Tell it what sign-ups get, and Mia can draft the counter sign, till line, thank-you and January emails in your voice, Leo can turn the sign into a printable graphic, and Nora drafts replies to "can you add me to your list?" and voucher messages for you to approve. GBot is not an email marketing tool: it does not store your customer list or send campaigns. You send from the tool you already use.

Write the sign and the till line this week. The shopper who finds you in December is easiest to win back in January, as long as you asked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn holiday shoppers into repeat customers?

Use three touches. Ask for an email address or follow once at checkout and tell people what they will get. Send a short thank-you within 48 hours. Then send one come-back email in January or February with a real reason to return, such as new stock, a booking slot or a gift card reminder.

What should I say at checkout to get email sign-ups?

Keep it to one sentence with a clear benefit, for example: 'Want first pick of new stock and one thank-you offer in January? I can add your email, and you can unsubscribe any time.' Use the same promise on your counter sign, website checkbox and DM replies.

Do I need permission to email customers who bought from me?

In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act does not require opt-in for marketing email, but every message needs an honest subject line, a working unsubscribe option, your valid postal address, and you must stop within 10 business days of an opt-out. In the UK, PECR lets you email existing customers about similar products if you collected the address during a sale and gave them a simple way to refuse at that time and in every email. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I text holiday customers about offers?

Texts carry stricter rules than email. In the US, FCC rules under the TCPA require prior express written consent for many automated marketing calls and texts. The safe habit is to get a clear written yes for texts, separate from email, and include a way to stop in every message.

What should a January follow-up email say?

Thank them again, give one reason to come back that month (new arrivals, a quiet-week booking slot, a class, a reminder that gift cards are ready to use), make one clear offer or none at all, and sign off with your name. Keep it under 120 words.

Can GBot send my holiday follow-up emails?

No. GBot is not an email marketing tool, so it does not store your customer list or send campaigns. It can draft the counter sign, checkout lines, thank-you and January emails in your voice, make a matching sign graphic and draft DM replies, and you send them from the email tool you already use.
