Small Business Saturday 2026 (Nov 28): 15 ideas and a 5-week plan

Small Business Saturday 2026 is Saturday, November 28. Here are 15 ideas for cafés, salons and shops that don't rely only on discounts, plus a week-by-week plan to get ready.

GBot Notes

Small Business Saturday 2026 is on Saturday, November 28, the day after Black Friday. You don't need to sign up, and you don't need a big discount. You need one good reason for people to come to you that day, and a few weeks of reminders.

Below: 15 ideas by type of business, a 5-week plan that starts this week, and what to post on the day.

What Small Business Saturday is (in one paragraph)

American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010, and the US Small Business Administration has co-sponsored it since 2011. It falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so in 2026 that's November 28. American Express offers free Shop Small signage, social posts and printable posters, so you don't have to design everything yourself.

First, pick one goal

Before you choose an idea, decide what the day is for. Pick one:

  • New customers: people who've never been in.
  • Bigger baskets: regulars who buy a little more.
  • Bookings for December: salons, studios and anyone with a calendar to fill.
  • Gift sales: gift cards, bundles and boxes for the holidays.

Each idea below says which goal it fits best.

15 Small Business Saturday ideas

Ideas for any small business

  1. A small gift with purchase (new customers). A sticker, a sample, a mini treat for the first 50 customers. People come early when there's a limit.
  2. A gift card bonus (gift sales). For example, buy a gift card of a set amount and get a smaller bonus card for yourself to use in January. You get the cash now and a return visit later. Set the expiry and terms clearly.
  3. A first look (new customers). Launch your winter item, colour or product on the day, not before. "Available from Small Business Saturday" gives people a date.
  4. A neighbour trail (new customers). Team up with two or three shops on your street. A card that gets stamped at each one, with a small prize when it's full.
  5. A "thank you" wall (regulars). Invite regulars to write why they shop with you on a card and pin it up. It's a photo spot and a reason to visit.
  6. Live demo hours (bigger baskets). 30 minutes of something people can watch: latte art, a styling demo, wrapping, a tasting.
  7. A donation link-up (new customers). Give a set amount per sale, or collect for a local cause. Say the exact amount and where it goes.

Ideas for cafés and bakeries

  1. A one-day menu item (bigger baskets). Something you only make that Saturday. Give it a name people can ask for.
  2. A holiday box (gift sales). Pre-order boxes of pastries or coffee and treats, collected on the day.
  3. A "bring a friend" pair deal (new customers). Two drinks and a shared pastry at a set price, so regulars bring someone new.

Ideas for salons, barbers and studios

  1. December booking day (bookings). Open your holiday calendar on Small Business Saturday, and give anyone who books that day a small extra (a treatment, a product sample).
  2. Gift a service (gift sales). A printed gift voucher for a specific service, ready to wrap.
  3. Mini-services for walk-ins (new customers). A 10-minute fringe trim, brow tidy or hand massage, so new people can try you.

Ideas for shops

  1. Personal shopping slots (bigger baskets). 15-minute slots where you pick gifts for someone's list.
  2. Free wrapping station (gift sales). Wrap anything bought that day. It's simple, it saves people time, and it makes your bags visible all over town.

Your 5-week plan

Today is late October, so here's a plan you can start this week.

Week 1 (Oct 26 – Nov 1): decide

  • Pick your goal and one or two ideas from the list.
  • Set any limits (first 50, number of boxes, end time).
  • Work out the cost. If it's a gift or bonus, decide the total you're happy to give away.
  • Order the free Shop Small signage if you want it, early, so it arrives in time.

Week 2 (Nov 2 – 8): prepare

  • Write the one sentence that explains your offer. If it takes two sentences, simplify it.
  • Make your poster and two or three social posts.
  • If you're teaming up with neighbours, agree the details in writing.
  • Tell your team what's happening and what to say.

Week 3 (Nov 9 – 15): announce

  • Post the announcement on Instagram, Facebook and your Google Business Profile.
  • Put the poster in your window and by the till.
  • Mention it to every customer at checkout. This often works better than any post.
  • Open pre-orders if you're doing boxes or bookings.

Week 4 (Nov 16 – 22): remind

  • Post a behind-the-scenes look (the boxes being packed, the new item, the wrapping station).
  • Send one email or message to your customer list, if you have one.
  • Check stock, staffing and opening hours for the day.

Week 5 (Nov 23 – 28): the week of

  • Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, and Black Friday is the 27th. Post a short "see you Saturday" reminder on Friday.
  • On the day: post in the morning, post a photo at lunchtime, and say thank you in the evening.
  • Write down what sold, how many new faces you saw, and what you'd change. That's your plan for 2027.

What to post (copy and edit)

Announcement (week 3):

Small Business Saturday is November 28, and we're doing something special: [your idea in one sentence]. [Limit, e.g. "First 50 people only."] See you there. #ShopSmall

Reminder (week 4):

One week to go. Here's a first look at [the item / the boxes / the wrapping station]. Saturday, November 28, from [time].

On the day:

We're open and [the thing] is ready. Thank you for shopping small with us today.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too many offers. One clear idea beats a list of five.
  • A discount with no limit. If you discount, set an end time or a quantity.
  • Announcing it the day before. Give people at least two weeks' notice.
  • Forgetting your regulars. They're the ones most likely to come and bring someone.

If making the posts is the part you never get to, GBot's Mia can draft your announcement, reminders and poster text for you to edit.
