Black Friday ideas for small businesses: 12 that aren't just discounts

12 Black Friday ideas for cafés, salons and shops that protect your margin — bundles, gift-card bonuses, pre-bookings and limited items — plus how BF, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday fit together.

GBot Notes

Black Friday does not have to mean a deep discount. For a café, salon or shop, a clear reason to buy — a bundle, a bonus gift card, a December booking slot, or one limited item — often beats matching a big-box percentage off.

Below: 12 margin-safe ideas, how Black Friday (27 Nov), Small Business Saturday (28 Nov) and Cyber Monday (1 Dec) fit together, and a simple week-of plan.

First, pick one goal

Before you choose an idea, decide what the weekend is for. Pick one:

  • New customers: people who have never been in.
  • Bigger baskets: regulars who buy a little more.
  • Gift sales: gift cards, bundles and boxes.
  • December bookings: salons, studios and anyone with a calendar to fill.

Each idea below says which goal it fits best.

12 Black Friday ideas that aren't just discounts

Ideas for any small business

  1. A gift-card bonus (gift sales). Buy a gift card of a set amount, get a smaller bonus card for yourself to use in January. You get the cash now and a return visit later. Set the expiry and terms clearly.
  2. A bundle with a name (bigger baskets). Three things that go together, at one price that is a little better than buying them apart — not half off everything. Name the bundle so people can ask for it.
  3. A "first look" limited item (new customers). One product or menu item available from Black Friday weekend only, with a clear end date. Scarcity without a fake farewell.
  4. A prepay for December (bookings / gift sales). Customers pay now for a December service, class or box. You lock in the week before the rush.
  5. A neighbour trail (new customers). Team up with two shops on your street. A card stamped at each stop, with a small prize when it is full. Runs Fri–Sat so Small Business Saturday rides along.
  6. A donation link-up (new customers). A set amount per sale to a local cause. Say the exact amount and where it goes. No need to cut your prices.

Ideas for cafés and bakeries

  1. A holiday box for collection (gift sales). Pre-order pastry or coffee boxes collected Fri–Sat. Cap the number so you do not overbake.
  2. A "buy the jar, keep the refill cheap" offer (bigger baskets). Sell a branded jar or tumbler; the fill that weekend is included or cheap. Same idea as a decoy cup: the vessel makes the drink feel like a deal. (If you want help pricing the fill vs the vessel, Sam can run the math on your real costs.)
  3. A one-weekend menu item (bigger baskets). Something you only make that Friday and Saturday. Give it a name people can post.

Ideas for salons, barbers and studios

  1. December booking day (bookings). Open your holiday calendar on Black Friday weekend. Anyone who books then gets a small extra (a treatment add-on or product sample) — not a cheaper haircut.
  2. A gift voucher for a named service (gift sales). A printed voucher for a specific service, ready to wrap. Easier to sell than a blank dollar amount.

Ideas for shops

  1. Personal shopping slots + free wrapping (gift sales / bigger baskets). Fifteen-minute slots to pick gifts from a list, with free wrapping on anything bought that weekend. Visible bags all over town.

How the weekend fits together

Day Date (2026) What it is good for
Black Friday Fri 27 Nov Online offers, gift cards, pre-orders, and a quieter in-store "teaser" if Saturday is your main day
Small Business Saturday Sat 28 Nov Your main in-person event — American Express founded it in 2010 and the SBA co-sponsors it; free Shop Small materials are available
Cyber Monday Mon 1 Dec Last call on gift cards, shipping cut-offs, and any leftover pre-orders

A simple pattern many owners use: announce one offer, run a light version on Friday, make Saturday the main day, and close online leftovers on Monday.

A 3-week plan (start early November)

Week of Nov 9: decide

  • Pick your goal and one or two ideas.
  • Set limits (first 50, number of boxes, end time).
  • Work out the real cost of any bonus or gift. If the numbers are messy, write them down before you advertise.

Week of Nov 16: prepare and announce

  • Write the one sentence that explains your offer.
  • Make a poster and two or three social posts. (Mia can draft the posts; Leo can make the visuals — nothing goes out until you approve.)
  • Put the poster in the window. Mention it at the till. Open pre-orders if you are doing boxes or bookings.

Week of Nov 23: remind and run

  • Thanksgiving is Thursday the 26th. Post a short "see you Friday / Saturday" on Wednesday or Friday morning.
  • On the day: post once in the morning, once with a photo at lunchtime, thank-you in the evening.
  • Write down what sold and what you would change. That is your plan for 2027.

What to post (copy and edit)

Announcement:

Black Friday weekend starts November 27. We are doing [your idea in one sentence]. [Limit.] See you Fri–Sat. #ShopSmall

Day-of:

It is [Black Friday / Small Business Saturday] and [your offer] is on until [time]. [Address or "link in bio for gift cards."]

Cyber Monday closer (if you sell online):

Last day for [gift cards / shipping by date X / pre-orders]. Order by midnight.

A note on discounts

If you do discount, discount one thing on purpose — a slow mover, a seasonal item, or the first unit in a bundle — not your whole shelf. A clear offer beats a vague "everything X% off" that trains people to wait.
