Same shop task, three AIs: what to keep

One late/grace salon text, the same prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude: real dated runs, a keep/rewrite checklist, no fake rankings.

Same shop task, three AIs: what to keep

Key takeaways

  • •One concrete task + the same prompt beats any 'best AI 2026' ranking for shop writing.
  • •Before you send: facts true, sounds like you, clear next step, short enough, invents nothing.
  • •Free tiers and login walls change what you get: date your runs and say which UI you used.
  • •Nothing auto-sends. You approve the words. GBot is not ChatGPT and does not claim a model win.
  • •Need more tasks after this checklist? Use our ChatGPT prompts post, then run them yourself.

Live model runs (2026-10-28, Europe/Istanbul)
ChatGPT (logged-out free) and Gemini (logged-out free, Flash-Lite) both returned SMS drafts the same day. Claude free web hit a login wall, so that column stays empty (no invented output).

"Best AI for small business" posts rarely help at the till. You need one text a client will actually understand: calm, factual, with a next step, not a league table.

So we ran a single salon task, with one copy-paste prompt, the same day in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude (free web where possible). The point is not a forever ranking. The point is a keep / rewrite / throw-away habit you can reuse for price notices, reminders and DM replies.

Related templates (already live): salon appointment reminder texts and 30 ChatGPT prompts for small-business owners.

The task (fixed)

Job: Draft a short SMS a salon owner sends when a client is past the stated grace window: calm, one next step, no guilt.

Locked facts (identical for every tool):

Fact Value
Business Riverton Colour Studio
Client first name Maya
Booked service Full colour + cut
Booked time Today, 2:00 PM
Grace 15 minutes (grace has already passed)
After grace Shorten today's service or rebook
Two concrete next times Thursday 11:00 AM or Friday 4:30 PM
Tone Plain owner voice; under ~400 characters if possible

Exact prompt (copy-paste)

Use this block verbatim in every UI. Do not "improve" it mid-compare. The dated free-web runs below used this prompt as written.

Write one SMS I can send from my salon phone. Facts only. Invent nothing.

Business name: Riverton Colour Studio
Client first name: Maya
Booked: full colour + cut today at 2:00 PM
Our grace period is 15 minutes. That window has already passed.
Offer two options only: (1) still come in but we may need to shorten today's service, or (2) rebook for Thursday 11:00 AM or Friday 4:30 PM.
Tone: calm plain owner voice, no guilt, no corporate filler.
Length: under 400 characters if possible.
Output: the SMS text only, ready to copy.

How we ran it

Field Result
Date 2026-10-28 (Europe/Istanbul)
Tools ChatGPT free web, Gemini free web, Claude free web
Same prompt Yes (block above)
Free vs paid Logged-out free where possible; note tier / model on each run
Honesty rule If a UI blocks or needs login we cannot complete, say so: never fabricate that tool's SMS

Status: ChatGPT and Gemini filled below. Claude still pending (login wall).

Side-by-side excerpts (real runs only)

ChatGPT

Hi Maya, it’s Riverton Colour Studio. Your 15-minute grace period has passed for today’s 2:00 PM full colour and cut. You can still come in, but we may need to shorten the service, or we can rebook for Thursday at 11:00 AM or Friday at 4:30 PM. Please let me know which works best.

Gemini

Hi Maya, this is Riverton Colour Studio. Since our 15-minute grace period has passed for your 2:00 PM appointment today, we have two options: you can still come in now, though we may need to shorten the service, or we can rebook you for Thursday at 11:00 AM or Friday at 4:30 PM. Please let us know what you'd like to do.

Claude

  • UI: claude.ai (free web intended)
  • Run date: 2026-10-28 Europe/Istanbul
  • Tier: not run (login wall; no guest chat)
  • Output: not available (do not invent)
  • Note: Claude redirected to login (Google / Apple / email / SSO only). Column left empty on purpose.

Keep / rewrite / throw-away checklist

Score every draft with the same columns. Claude stays pending until a real reply exists.

Check ChatGPT Gemini Claude
Facts true (name, service, time, grace, two slots)? Yes Partial (omits service name) pending
Sounds like a real owner (not brochure voice)? Yes Mostly (a bit more template) pending
Clear next step (shorten or rebook)? Yes Yes pending
Short enough for SMS (~400 chars)? Yes (281) Yes (321) pending
Invents fee / price / extra policy? No No pending
Keep / rewrite / throw Keep Rewrite (add service; tighten voice) pending

Rule: there is no overall "winner" cell. You may keep lines from more than one draft.

What every general AI still gets wrong for shops

Even strong drafts tend to:

  • Invent hours, fees or "our policy" lines you never stated
  • Sound corporate ("We value your patronage…")
  • Run long for SMS
  • Tempt you to auto-send. Don't. Approve first.

General chat also does not know your menu unless you paste it. That is why a helper that already holds your prices after onboarding can speed drafts: it still should not send without you.

Optional product note: Mia in GBot can draft customer wording in your voice for approval. GBot is not ChatGPT, does not auto-send SMS or Instagram DMs, and does not claim to beat named models in a benchmark.

After you finish this compare

  1. Save the prompt + dated outputs in a staff note.
  2. Reuse the checklist for the next awkward text (price change, waitlist, late delivery).
  3. For more task prompts, use our ChatGPT prompts for small-business owners, then run them yourself in whatever tools you already open.
  4. Pair late/grace wording with your live reminder templates and how to tell customers about a price increase.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI is best for small-business writing?

There is no permanent winner. For customer texts, pick the draft that keeps your facts, sounds like you, and offers one clear next step, then edit. Rankings change with free vs paid, the day's model, and the prompt.

Should I use the same prompt in ChatGPT and Gemini?

Yes for a fair compare. Paste the identical brief (names, times, grace, two rebook options). Then score each reply with the same checklist instead of crowning a favourite brand.

What should I check before sending an AI customer text?

Facts true? Sounds like you? Clear next step? Short enough for SMS? Invents no fee, price or policy? If any answer is no, rewrite before you hit send.

Is GBot the same as ChatGPT?

No. GBot is a small-business assistant product. Mia can draft customer wording in your voice after you add menu and prices. It is not a ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude review and does not auto-send SMS or DMs.

Can these tools send SMS or Instagram DMs for me?

Consumer chat tools draft text. They do not replace your phone, booking app or Instagram send button. Approve every line, then send from what you already use.
